ABOUT US

Fairwinds Automation was founded in 2015 and specializes in control system engineering and integration.

We are based in Forest, VA, and serve clients in the water/wastewater treatment, marine, power, and manufacturing sectors. We provide services ranging from professional engineering design and programming to turnkey control system delivery and commissioning. We work with an establish network of suppliers and control panel manufacturers and are ready to meet all of your control system requirements.

We have experience with all major automation product lines, including Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider Modicon, Automation Direct, Wonderware, and Ignition. We are an Inductive Automation Gold certified integrator of the Ignition SCADA platform. 

Fairwinds Automation is member of the International Society of Automation (ISA) and currently sits on the ISA112 SCADA standard development committee.

We are a federally certified Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB). Fairwinds Automation is a trade name of Fairwinds Consulting LLC, which is registered in the VA Vendor Information Pages database as an SDVOSB with DUNS number 049950774.

Joe Carlin, P.E., M.Eng

Fairwinds Automation was founded by Joe Carlin. Joe is a registered Professional Engineer in Virginia and holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Joe completed graduate-level courses in control system design and digital signal processing, and was an electrical engineering instructor at MIT.

Joe is an experienced control system engineer, and has designed and programmed all major brands of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) software packages.

As a Professional Electrical Engineer, Joe has designed the electrical distribution and protection systems for numerous industrial facilities. He has experience in consulting during the construction and commissioning phases of both electrical and controls projects.

Joe has over 15 years of experience as an electrical and controls engineer, and has worked on projects as diverse as water and wastewater treatment plants, manufacturing facilities, U.S. Navy propulsion plants, medium voltage electrical switchgear, and VA healthcare facilities.

Joe served as a U.S. Navy Submarine Warfare Officer and is a service-disabled Afghanistan veteran. He is a retired U.S Navy Commander and served as Commanding Officer of a submarine maintenance unit.
