Fairwinds Automation is currently designing, constructing, and programming a complete SCADA system for the Bedford, VA Electric Department (BED).

The central SCADA station at BED headquarters uses the Ignition 8 software platform for data acquisition, real-time display, alarming, and historical data analysis. Using Ignition's multi-monitor capability, users can display up to five different screens on the control room monitor array.

This project also involves installing and programming new remote terminal units (RTUs) at 10 electrical substations. The RTUs feature industry-leading Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) automation controllers and communications equipment that links circuit breakers, protective relays, voltage regulators, generators, and power monitoring equipment to the central SCADA system using open standard Ethernet communications (DNP3 protocol) over a system-wide fiberoptic network.
